I rarely buy hard liquor for myself to keep at home because I try not to drink it too regularly, but I had occasion to pick up a bottle of whiskey this week and I tried Jameson's for the first time basically because McNulty drank it on "The Wire."

It is, of course, excellent.

I'll go with either Jameson or Bushmills. They're both fine spirits.

Woodford for sipping, Jameson's for shooting. Rum, vodka and tequila all show up in mixed drinks in the summer. And, of course, vodka for lono at Passover.

I don't like blended whiskeys as a general rule.

If I have my choice and money isn't an object, I start with good single malt scotches. Oban Manager's Choice is damned good. Macallan 18 is a favorite, too,

If I have to pay for it, I am more likely to go Macallan 12. If it's night time and I am winding down and I am grabbing a bottle, it is usually Irish Whiskey. Jameson's, to be exact. I find it incredibly drinkable and a couple of belts relaxes me like no one's business.

I went with bourbon because it's my drink of choice, but at the top level, which I can't afford, I prefer single malt Scotch.

If I tend to drink too much whiskey however, I tend to try to cut on things that don't necessarily need cutting.

Had an Irish "single pot" whiskey called Redbreast last week. It was outstanding, maybe the best aroma of any whiskey I've ever had.
But I'm ordinarily a Scotch guy. J&B and soda in bars. Glenlivet rocks at home.

I live pretty close to the heart of the Bourbon Trail. I'm driving distance from Heaven Hill, and one of the main Jim Beam distilleries is also in Bardstown. And I used to live right across the street from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort. I loved the smell when they were making the stuff.

My vote went to bourbon.

When I drink, which is rare, Jameson's is usually involved.

Scotch for me. Laphroaig favored, but McAllen 18 is preferred. Auchentoshan is interesting and Usher's is the best bargai whiskey in the world.

Bourbon's great, too. Tennessee? Not so much.

Irish whiskey is fine, but since it can be turned into a political argument, I say a pox on all of it!

Redbreast and Jameson's have the same ultimate corporate owner and, perhaps more importantly, are produced at the same distillery.

For St. Patrick's Day this year, the local BLT steakhouse did a multi-course dinner with several agings of Jameson's and one course with Redbreast. Great fun.
