Weird personal note: my mom lived on Alcatraz when she was a toddler.

Now that's weird. Did your grandparents work there or something?

Yep. My grandfather was a guard in the federal penitentiary system. Alcatraz was considered a good assignment because the pay was the same as other penitentiaries but you didn't have to pay for housing because the families were housed on the island. My mom's older sisters actually took a ferry to school each day.

My grandfather knew the "Birdman of Alcatraz." Thought he was an asshole.

When I did the Alcatraz tour, which many have done, they twice went on rants about how the Birdman was a pos criminal and anything else was revisionist history. Had to respect the fact that 30 years later the Feds were still on message.

Just so everyone is clear, Alcatraz looks like a beautiful spot in the San Francisco Bay and it is, but as an exposed small piece of land, the weather sucked/sucks. The wind whips through there all year its not very enjoyable.

Lots of waterfront property in B.C. is surprisingly cold and windy, even in summer. Cold ocean, cold wind.

The worst windburn I've ever gotten was at Alcatraz and riding the ferry for the tour. The wind never seems to stop blowing north of the Bay Bridge, from Emeryville to Albany, either. Our wedding reception was on Treasure Island with a panoramic view of The City. But the wind blew so hard -- and the fog rolled in -- so the photographer gave up on an outside shot of us.
