The 1920s news story was the trials and later execution of Sacco and Vanzetti. Probably the most followed story in the world at the time as well.

The Bonus Army march of 1932 was big headline maker of the time. A strong overlap of WWI and the Depression. Patton, Eisenhower and MacArthur would cut their teeth ordering federal troops to harass WWI vets on the streets of DC.

Not sure of the play the Cuban Revolution got in the 50s, but that seems like a pretty big deal. Does the American Indian Movement in the 70s register (specifically the 71 day standoff at Wounded Knee)?

The Challenger and Chernobyl disasters seem to be the events of the '80s I remember paying the most attention to on the news.

I picked Louis/Schmeling II because in 1936, while people knew Hitler was evil, they didn't think he was going to be *that* evil. They thought he was some crazed dictator who would eventually get tossed.

By 1938, with the Anschluss (taking over Austria) in March and the fight in June, people knew that Hitler was trying to take over Europe, hence, the fight was a lot more than just a heavyweight title fight. Emotions were extremely high.

Has anybody mentioned Waco for the 1990s? That dominated the news for weeks.

For the Sports-Centric lists, for the 1970s, wouldn't the birth of the DH and the birth of baseball free agency rank pretty high up because of their impact on the game of baseball (DH) and all sports (free agency)?

I probably should have, because Waco begat Oklahoma City and probably Columbine too. That was a recurrent theme in the 90s: angry unrest among extremists (and not just on the far right) in the U.S.
