As bad as those first two picks were, they did get Ashley Ambrose and Jason Belser later on and that gives it some redeeming value.

I think the Jeff George draft (1990) was worse:
    Round (overall)
1 1 Jeff George QB Illinois
2 36 Anthony Johnson RB Notre Dame
4 83 Stacey Simmons WR Florida
    4 94 Bill Schultz G USC
4 103 Alan Grant DB Stanford
    4 106 Pat Cunningham T Texas A&M
6 148 Tony Walker LB Southeast Missouri State
7 179 James Singletary LB East Carolina
8 206 Ken Clark RB Nebraska
8 213 Harvey Wilson DB Southern
9 232 Darvell Huffman WR Boston University
11 290 Carnel Smith DE Pittsburgh
12 311 Gene Benhart QB Western Illinois
    12 316 Dean Brown G Notre Dame

The last truly awful Patriots draft - the last one before Kraft and Parcells took over the team.
Turner was a good player at fullback, as was Gash, but the rest of the draft is b-a-d.

RD SEL # PLAYER POSITION SCHOOL
    1 13 Eugene Chung T Virginia Tech (
2 35 Rod Smith DB Notre Dame
    3 64 Todd F. Collins LB Carson-Newman
3 71 Kevin Turner RB Alabama
4 90 Dion Lambert DB UCLA
4 93 Darren Anderson DB Toledo
5 116 Dwayne Sabb LB New Hampshire
6 165 Tracy Boyd -- Elizabeth City State
    7 176 Wayne Hawkins -- Southwest State
    7 194 Jim Gray -- West Virginia
8 204 Scott Lockwood RB USC
8 205 Sam Gash RB Penn State
9 232 David Dixon DT Arizona State
    10 261 Turner Baur -- Stanford
    10 277 Steve Gordon C California
    11 288 Mike Petko -- Nebraska
    12 333 Freeman Baysinger -- Humboldt State

2001 would be one that comes to mind: Jamar Fletcher instead of Drew Brees.

And the quarterback Carlos Brown from Pacific they drafted in the 12th round in 1975 later changed his name to Alan Autry and became an actor.

You might know him as Bubba from "In the Heat of the Night" (as well as the football coach in the criminally underrated "Southern Comfort").

He was also a two-term mayor of Fresno and now hosts a radio talk show there.

They got Frank Gore in the 3rd that year. Plus 2nd round pick David Baas is still starting.

The 49ers 2002 is easily worse.

    2002 1 27(27) 49ers Mike Rumph DB Miami (FL)
    2002 3 4(69) 49ers Saleem Rasheed LB Alabama
    2002 4 4(102) 49ers Jeff Chandler PK Florida
    2002 4 29(127) 49ers Kevin Curtis DB Texas Tech
    2002 5 28(163) 49ers Brandon Doman QB Brigham Young
    2002 5 37(172) 49ers Josh Shaw DT Michigan State
    2002 6 29(201) 49ers Mark Anelli TE Wisconsin
    2002 7 28(239) 49ers Eric Heitmann OG Stanford
    2002 7 37(248) 49ers Kyle Kosier OG Arizona State
    2002 7 45(256) 49ers Teddy Gaines DB Tennessee

They followed it up with a nearly as bad 2003, hence their struggles to win lately.

    2004 1 31(31) 49ers Rashaun Woods WR Oklahoma State
    2004 2 14(46) 49ers Justin Smiley OG Alabama
    2004 2 26(58) 49ers Shawntae Spencer DB Pittsburgh
    2004 3 14(77) 49ers Derrick Hamilton WR Clemson
    2004 4 8(104) 49ers Isaac Sopoaga DT Hawaii
    2004 4 31(127) 49ers Richard Seigler LB Oregon State
    2004 6 23(188) 49ers Andy Lee PT Pittsburgh
    2004 6 33(198) 49ers Keith Lewis DB Oregon
    2004 7 16(217) 49ers Cody Pickett QB Washington
    2004 7 25(226) 49ers Christian Ferrara DT Syracuse

Anyways the real worst one is 2007 St. Louis Rams.

2007 1 13(13) Rams Adam Carriker DE Nebraska
2007 2 20(52) Rams Brian Leonard RB Rutgers
2007 3 20(84) Rams Jonathan Wade DB Tennessee
    2007 5 2(139) Rams Dustin Fry C Clemson
2007 5 17(154) Rams Clifton Ryan DT Michigan State
2007 6 16(190) Rams Ken Shackleford OT Georgia
2007 7 38(248) Rams Keith Jackson DT Arkansas
2007 7 39(249) Rams Derek Stanley WR Wisc. Whitewater

5th round pick Clifton Ryan is the only player still with the team and four seasons later and he has a career total of 103 tackles. 1st rd pick Carriker has less than 100 tackles in his career and just 3.5 sacks and 2nd round pick Leonard was set packing after two seasons and has just 455 career yards. If it wasn't for them being so terrible the entire draft would have probably gotten less than 10 starts.

    I didn't know that. Awesome!

Also, I've posted this before, but former Packers first-round bust QB Rich Campbell is one of us ... he works for a paper in Florida.

Actually, Todd Collins was a pretty good linebacker who started for 7 of his 8 seasons in the NFL, including in Super Bowls with both New England and St. Louis. I believe he had a neck injury that shortened his career.

I would submit the 1997 draft for consideration:
    1 Chris Canty 29 CB
    2 Brandon Mitchell 59 DT
    3a Sedrick Shaw 61 RB
    3b Chris Carter 89 FS
    4a Damon Denson 97 G
    4b Ed Ellis 125 T
    5 Vernon Crawford 159 OLB
    6 Tony Gaiter 192 WR
    7 Scott Rehberg 230 G

Best from that group was Brandon Mitchell. Nobody had an impact near the level of Gash, Turner or Collins.

As Michael_Gee mentioned, the Matich draft was a special level of awful, as was the 1990 draft, which featured Chris Singleton picked at No. 8 and Ray Agnew at No. 10, followed by Tommy Hodson, Greg McMurtry, Junior Robinson, Jon Melander, James Gray, Shawn Bouwens, Anthony Landry, Sean Smith, Ventson Donnelson and Blaine Rose.

Now that 1990 class, that was special.
