Re: 7.9 earthquake off American Samoa (UPDATE: again, 6.9 at Sumatra Island)

A fifth earthquake just hit the region 25 minutes ago:

    6.3, near Tonga.

So geologically what does this all mean? It's all been concentrated to one area of the globe, should other regions be concerned?

Sounds like we might be getting a new volcano...

As someone who lives near a volcano, this is all rather disconcerting.

The bigger question: Are a lot of these quakes aftershocks from the 9.0 that hit in 2004 - the one that unleashed the huge tsunami in the first place?

If that's the case, then if a 9.0 ever hit California, they'd have a bitch of a time trying to get the affected area rebuilt for months, even years.

Unless you're commuting from the south side, you'll be fine. Just watch out for that vog.

THE Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has issued a tsunami watch for Australia after a massive 8.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Vanuatu.

The tsunami watch was issued for Australia and a warning was issued for Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Nauru, PNG, Tuvalu, Fiji, New Caledonia and surrounding islands.

Any waves generated by the tsunami were expected to hit Vanuatu within an hour of the quake, which struck at 08:08 (AEDT) and would reach Brisbane roughly three hours later, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

    And now a 7.3 aftershock.
