  1. I had never heard of this bizarre soccer ending with one side scoring an own goal to force penalty kicks (because it needed to win by two goals to advance) and the other side trying to respond with an own goal of its own.

Is that why they call it "The Beautiful Game"?
  5. I'm not clear on the particulars, but I remember reading about a high school football playoff game (in Indiana?) taking a weird turn at the end.

Team A is winning by one point, has the ball around Team B's 10-yard line with a minute to play. Team B is out of timeouts, so Team B coach signals his defense to let the offense run through them and score a touchdown so Team A can't run out the clock.

Team B gets ball back, engineers miracle scoring drive , adds two-point conversion to tie, then wins in OT.

All I needed to see were the words "bizarre" and "soccer" to know the story involved Barbados.

Seriosuly, it's a very amusing region to be in. Anything can happen and it usually does.

High school football game? Shit, that happened in the Super Bowl.

Before Georgia finally got rid of overtime penetration (heh-heh), shit like that used to happen all the time. Essentially, the rule said that if the 10 minutes of OT finished with the score still tied, the team that advanced nearest the other team's end zone on a non-scoring possession would be the winner. So if a team was on defense and trailing on penetration, it was not uncommon for that team to allow a score to get the ball back, so it could try for a TD and a two-pointer. God, that rule was stupid.

A long time ago in the NASL (of course, only in soccer) they gave 6 points for a victory and an addition point for goals up to three. So a team could get nine points a game. On the last game of the season, this team needed nine points to make the playoffs. So, if they were winning, 2-1, as time was running out, it would have benefited them to score on themselves to tie it, force overtime and try to get the third goal in OT. It almost happened, but didn't.
