A little more info.

- Mom had already passed away.

- They are raising money for a funeral via a local diner.

Sweet God we have fallen into the complete and total squalor as a country.

Seriously. If the lowest members of our society have to live like this, we have no hope as a nation.

And this is not isolated. The only difference between this situation and 100,000 others is the one terrible mistake that was made that ended a cycle of nothingness.

 

In the link you posted, it said nothing of the squalor they lived in. Only thing it mentioned was that his wife had died out of state. As far as I know from the article they were middle class and he was a few bricks short of a load.
Mind you the story didn't mention anything about raising money through the diner for a funeral either.
Not doubting you, just more curious about the actual conditions they were living in, the link wasn't very helpful
