Year Versus Season

High school and (most) college football happens in a calendar year.

I generally stick with season, though, but don't have a rule on the matter.

I use both interchangably. I've never had a problem with it. Neither, apparently, have my editors.

Whether it's "year" or "season," be sure to preface it by writing "on the season" or "on the year." I can't get enough of it from the radio gasbags.

"Year" vs. "season" is a big pet peeve of mine. Another is "past" vs. "last."

Another is the use of "native."

    Born there = native.
Not born there = not a native.

year if it is within the calendar year, season if it crosses over...

I never really thought about the distinction, I guess. I've always just used them interchangeably.

Zebra: Maybe your editors just don't notice.

If you're covering the NHL, and something happens in November, and you refer to something that happened in March, and you reference it as "last year," it's not nuance. It's wrong. Worse (if that's possible than "wrong) it can confuse your readers.

Not really a gray area, at least the 6,000 places I've worked.

I think the people who use campaign for season are the same ones who use stanza for quarter or period, and frame for inning.

    Hate, hate, hate them all.

    The usages, not the people.

I take year, but season will cover the spread.

Just call them all a season. That's what they are.
