Yeah I Bought Thriller Today

A lot of us who come from completely different backgrounds think this was, and is, an amazing LP, as is a lot of his earlier work. That it has stood the test of time and is still influential within musical circles to people who weren't born when it first came out is impressive to me.

Sure, Montana/Cyrus may sell just as much merchandise, and sell out concerts and movie theatres as he once did. She's a cultural phenomonon too, only she's the one from the late 00's. But that's where the similarities end.

I think 25 years from now, when 'Non-Stop Dance Party' hits its 25th anniversary, there won't be a special, anniversary reissue. I don't think at the end of this year it will make any 'Top 100 Albums Of The Year' lists. There's a reason for that, just as there's a reason 'Thriller' did make those lists and earn 12 Grammy nominations. It's because it was a massive critical success, as well as a commercial one.

But that's ok. Since by me stating the case for this album, I am obviously obsessed with everything to do with the 1980's including wearing my Papa Smurf t-shirt to bed, to the Polly Pocket dreamhouse I play with every day. Since I do regularly go into Burger King to ask 'Where's the Beef' or all of that other stuff you think I do on a day-to-day basis, I'll leave this thread alone.

(Of course, if you think about it before throwing more wild generalizations about, I grew up in England, where I really didn't experience any of that stuff until I moved to the U.S. and had VH1 and 'I Love The 80's' let me know what was culturally relevant in this country while I was living on another continent.)

gb - i made those "wild generalizations" in an effort to show you that a lot of pure shit turned gold in those days, period. and a lot of the items that turned golden were driven by parents making purchases for their children.

also, i don't think my boys and i were ahead of the curve when thriller came out. yes, we listened to head-banging stuff, but we also bought air supply and crap along those lines. but, mj WAS mocked in my circles. his music had absolutely no meaningful value and, well, he was a pussy who wore a single glove and tried to act tough. what's not to mock? we were 16 and 17 years old. dude, we weren't progressive thinkers.

i don't see why it's so difficult for you to understand/believe that every person i hung with thought he was a sissy whose voice sounded much like fingernails on a chalkboard ... i will admit that the ebony and ivory vid almost redeemed him, but he went on to follow up with bad, which pushed us over the edge in our hatred of the gloved one.

So you are now lumping 'Thriller' in with a bunch of pure shit, as you call it, simply because it sold a ton of copies. Don't worry about the musical acheivement it was seen as by a great number in the music world, you and your friends didn't like it, and as such all those who did buy it were either 11 or buying it for those who were 11. No matter that while most of those fads nowadays are seen as crap, 'Thriller' is still musically influential to this day, and still being bought.

But as we all know, if you disagree, you can take a big cup of STFU, because you are wrong and the almighty Petty is right. Then your buddies come in and say how funny you are, when all you've done is continually bleat about how Thriller is no different to Hannah Montana or the pet rock, or 'where's the beef,' or care bears, when you know, deep down, that the comparison is completely false, that this is about musical achievement, and musical influence.

As I already said, I believe you and FoaF when you say all of you and your friends didn't own it, and thought it was dreck. But just because you and your friends think that doesn't automatically make it so, or make it a valid part of the list you so courteously gave. But there's no point in trying to engage in a debate with you, because you are so set in your ways and beliefs that nothing is going to shift you from them now.

There's no need to prove MJ's influence when artists all over the place point to him as a key influence. The proof is in the pudding.
