Yankees Beat Reporter in Iselin, NJ

New Jersey Advance Media is in search of an aggressive beat reporter to cover the New York Yankees. The reporter must be ready for the demands of covering a Major League Baseball team in the most competitive media market in the country. The reporter will have experience on a pro or college sports beat, with a proven ability to break news, develop sources, react quickly and engage readers on social media. The reporter should be able to handle the challenges of daily beat coverage while also developing longer-term enterprise projects. The Yankees is a two-reporter beat, so teamwork is crucial.

NJ Advance Media, N.J.'s largest and most influential news organization, provides content for NJ.com, The Star-Ledger and our other affiliated papers. Our digital-first newsroom values innovation, voice, competition and, most importantly, a shared passion for journalism. Our teams have won three Pulitzer Prizes, 20 NY Emmy Awards for our video work and virtually every major award that recognizes excellence in News, Sports, Features and Data journalism.

    Job functions:

    • Provide reporting and analysis
    • Contribute to the department's traffic and enterprise goals
    • Report and create journalistically sound digital posts that are balanced and factual, timely and topical, and well-sourced
    • Use effective techniques of digital journalism: frequent posting, appropriate aggregation, engaging readers on social media, and monitoring traffic to better understand what is connecting with readers
    • Work as a teammate on a dual beat, while also having the ability to work independently and remotely
    • Self-publish articles, photos and videos, and be able to learn the Arc publishing system or any future CMS

    Required Education, Experience and Skills:

    • Bachelor's degree in Journalism or Communications or related field required
    • Minimum 2 years of pro or college sports beat experience, with demonstrated reporting, writing and organizational skills
    • Proven experience building, maintaining and engaging an active audience for a top-tier professional or college sports team
    • Ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately
    • Experience with search engine optimization practices
    • Experience using social media to source and promote content
    • Demonstrated capability to react quickly and deliver audience as news breaks on the beat
    • Understanding of the methods and tools used to deliver content across a variety of platforms such as Moveable Type CMS,
    • Understanding the imperatives of multiple platforms -- desktop, mobile, etc.
    • Ability to leverage relationships with sources to deliver content that differentiates the organization from competitors

Tread very carefully here. The Star-Ledger days are long gone. The grand poobahs running NJ dot com are all about churning out click bait and winning the SEO wars.

Pitchers and catchers reporting as I type. This is being listed now? Or is it different with the big boy/girl jobs?
