The hilarious thing in all this is the empty threat of shutting down the paper.

OK, asshole, shut it down. Let the Toledo Blade be your family's flagship holding.

They’re doing the same thing there as well. And the threat is very real from them.

No it isn't. If they shut down those papers, they wouldn't be the Blocks anymore. They'd be some random rich guys to whom no one needs to pay attention. Their legacy would be shitting on their father's legacy. Not gonna happen. Tho I admit, Toledo is at least a non-zero chance.

    But it’s the union’s fault ...

Yup. The union locked them in a conference room and demanded that they give away their content for free on the internet for two decades, only to then have the suits complain that they had no idea how to make money off of the Internet. I used to say this in our weekly budget meetings: newspaper management's favorite song has been that they don't know how to generate revenue from the Internet, meanwhile pornography -- another industry that was available in a hard form (go ahead and snicker) originally then transitioned to online -- had it figured out in about 10 minutes. So pornographers are smarter than the Harvard MBAs running these newspaper chains.

One of the greatest posts ever. All of it is true. It's hilarious how these second generation suits were victims of the first real age of consultants. The consultants sold the suits at the very top a lotta misinformation and the suits bought it. Meanwhile, they continued to devalue their own loyal employees and would never listen to the loyal veteran employees with actual journalism backgrounds. I'd laugh at the publishers but they are still making tons of $$$ just not in the traditional sense. They are making it by laying people off and stripping newspapers bare. GREAT POST!

Don't you mean "Fuckin' INCOMPETENT suits"? :D

Fredrick doesn't cuss in his posts. He tries to stay civil but has a disdain for the suits. I don't like anybody who is willing to accept edicts from the top that they know make no sense.

The porn industry figured it out? Last I checked, any Jimmy or Joe can find hours upon hours of free porn of all fetishes online for which to beat off to. Does not anybody buy porn anymore?

the bottom line is porn figured out immediately in the 90s the importance of pay walls and monthly fees while this illustrious industry remained clueless.
