Not only that, the source was an Iranian part-time arms dealer on whom the AP was doing an investigative piece, which was how Jay Solomon's involvement was discovered:

Newspaper fires prominent journalist over ethical conflict

Solomon denies it, but it's kind of hard to buy given the content of the emails AP found.

The emails were hacked! Why are we relying on them or even reporting on them!!!

    Seriously.

This is stunning on so many levels. In his statement to the AP he said he "entered into a world I didn’t understand.”

He wrote a book that was published last year about Iran that is subtitled, "Spy Games, Bank Battles and Secret Deals That Reshaped the Middle East."

I'm guessing he understood the world too well. I love the Journal as much as anyone, but that is a black eye. Really good work by AP.

Shouldn't this go on the Getting Out of the Business thread?

In Canada, CBC fired a terrific political broadcaster/reporter -- Evan Solomon -- two years ago because he got into business doing art deals with people he covered. No relation, however.
