Save the hue and cry if you disagree with premise. Looking for feedback from people who think there are some writers who know their sport well enough to move into the GM office. Play along, please. Here are my candidates.

    NFL- King, Clayton, Schein, Mortensen
    NBA- McCallum, MacMullan, Smith, D'Allesandro.
    MLB- Gammons, Nightengale, Sherman, Kernan.
NHL- I'm not qualified on this one.

Gammons? I wasn't around for his heyday, but I read his stuff at ESPN.com and it's "So-and-so will be signed by Friday." Friday comes and nothing. He was wrong too many times for me to actually consider him good.

As for being a GM, don't forget the negotiating angle. These guys have to be good enough to get people to sign deals and make trades, akin to getting sources on the record.

I think there is a big difference between knowing the sport - which the above certainly do. To be an effective GM, dealing with agents, owners and players is probably 80 percent of the job. Or at least what separates the good ones from the bad ones.
