It's far, far more of a Southern thing, though by no means exclusive to the region. An egomaniac like Bill Walsh did it when he went back to Stanford . . . largely a needless caution.

There are coaches who need them. But most of the coaches who need them are in the SEC. A large part of that is because the fans are so batshit crazy.

Phil Fulmer probably had good reason to fear for his life when he would travel to Alabama. I'm guessing the same could definitely be said about Spurrier and Saban.

I would be curious where else a coach would be at risk. Maybe JoePa needs one because he's JoePa. Maybe Jim Tressel needs one to keep his former players away from him. :)

What does it say about our society that a college football coach needs a full-time bodyguard because so many of the fans are nuts? Wonder if he should fear more the fans of his own team or those of their rivals?

Probably a combination of the two, especially if you're in the SEC.

SEC football coaches are usually the most famous and among the most powerful (and also among the wealthiest) people in their states. Find a celebrity of similar caliber in Los Angeles or New York (or choose your own, more enlightened place) and then see if they don't have full-time security as well.

    Many missed:
-Outside of the Christmas tree, perhaps the most famous of all - The tree that grew in Brooklyn.

    - The tree by the brook where the song bird sings

    - The tree at Bridge of no return that almost started WWIII

The tree that fell in the forest when there was no one to hear it.

What about all the trees that get burned on a regular basis?

Is the tree we save when we go to paper-less billing famous? Or just one we pitied?
