Wright Thompson on Wright Thompson on Steve McNair.

I love the guy's writing. I do. Others who think it's overworked, I couldn't disagree more. I think he's amazingly talented and I would give an arm to write ONE piece the way he writes every day.

But the story wasn't about McNair. It was about Thompson writing about McNair. It worked on the Father's Day piece about Augusta, but it didn't work here, for me.

I haven't read it yet but I normally like Thompson's stuff. However, I start to get cautious when writers begin writing about writing a famous person. When I subscribed to Vanity Fair many years ago there was one writer (I can't remember the name) who did the cover story on the a hot actor/actress of the day almost monthly. But every story was about his interview, their lunch(es) together, his invitation to the person's mansion etc. It became predictable and unreadable after awhile. I hope Thompson doesn't fall into that trap.

That last graph pretty much nails it. Wonder what his editor thought?

    Wright is an amazing talent.

That said, he needs to get away from "I" shit.

No offense to Wright, Gary Smith, or any of the other brilliant feature writers, but if they want to tell us what they think, they should write a column.

The second I read an "I" in a story like that, it's ruined.

    Maybe it's just me.

Wright can't decide if he wants to be Joe Posnanski or Gary Smith.

He's talented enough to be either, but he can't be both.

This is the perfect summation of his career, to this point.
