Massive bodyguard fail -- if not dead, the shooter should have been unconscious/comatose/paraplegic within three seconds.

After the intended victim (quite amazingly) fought the guy off within the first few seconds, it should have been lights-out before he took another breath.

I was at a Bob Dylan show in spring 1981 (six months after John Lennon) where a guy jumped up on stage and grabbed him from behind in an armlock. Within a couple seconds about four very big guys came sprinting on stage, ripped Dylan free, introduced the guy's head to the floorboards with a resounding thud, and dragged him off by the heels with his head going kacunk-kachunk-kachunk as they dragged him down the stage stairs.

Sirhan Sirhan is sitting in a prison in California, watching this and bragging that this guy is an amateur.

    Dangerous, but inept.

Fromme, Sarah Jane Moore and Hinckley should have been executed.

Making a credible attempt on the POTUS should buy you an automatic trip to the needle.

    Best failed assassination attempt ever:
A deranged guy approaches President Andrew Jackson and has not one, but two, pistols misfire. A highly irate Jackson, who was nearly 70 at the time, set in on the guy and started beating the piss out of him with his walking cane. It ended with the guy begging people to pull Jackson off of him (there was no Secret Service or even real protection for the president then).

I find stuff like that so interesting. When James Garfield was shot, it was at the train station. No security. Just him and a few people -- one was Robert Todd Lincoln, Lincoln's son, who was his secretary of war. The guy who shot him was a nut job who had been stalking Garfield and showing up at the White House asking for a patronage job -- apparently presidents in those days spent a few hours a day with their door open for walk ins, mostly people asking for jobs. Garfield's assassination led to civil service reform.

Also, Garfield's wound wouldn't have been life threatening today. Joseph Lister had already introduced antiseptic medicine by 1881. ... unfortunately, most doctors thought it was hooey and weren't practicing it. So almost immediately, they were sticking their hands in the wound and pretty much ensuring he was going to get an infection that would kill him.

Yeah, the Secret Service didn't start guarding the president until after McKinley was assassinated in 1901. Before that, they were mainly responsible for trying to catch counterfeiters.

And presidential candidates didn't get Secret Service protection until after Robert Kennedy was killed in 1968.

Turns out it wasn't an actual gun. It was a gas pistol. Also saw elsewhere that people who kept whipping the guy after he was neutralized could be charged.

It doesn't take much pistol to make a fatal head shot. Most instructors teach to shoot center mass, which won't stop a typical duster.
