World War II movies

I always have like the moved "The Big Red One" and thus I got the Reconstruction DVD. Watched it last night; still a great flick, I think perhaps the best World War II movie ever.

    Some others:

    - Saving Private Ryan (Hollywood does the war; some great scenes, some great cliches)
    - The Bridge on the River Kwai
    - The Guns of Navarone
    - The Dirty Dozen (not sure this is a "real" war movie, but always enjoyed it)
    - Where Eagles Dare

Never say the Longest Day, but it's supposed to be great.

Special nomination: Band of Brothers series.

I don't include on this list The Thin Red Line (a disappointment) or Kelly's Heroes (a Vietnam-era movie disguised as World War II fare).

OK, what am I missing ... what should I see in the future?

    The Great Escape.

  4. 1) The Longest Day.
    2) The Thin Red Line (which I love, but a lot of people really hate.)
    3) Sands of Iwo Jima.
    4) Twelve O'Clock High.
    5) Downfall.

Does that count? If so, then definitely.

Again, does that count? If the only requirement to be a World War II movie is a backdrop of Nazis, then I'm nominating Raiders of the Lost Ark.

LOOOOVE Midway. Outstanding. Even with the sappy "I married a Japanese girl" crap. Big Red One's great, too, as is Ryan.
At the long behest of a friend, I finally checked out "Band of Brothers." Wow.

Another fave: Run Silent, Run Deep.
