Genuine irony only happens in O'Henry short stories.

I've made it a rule to never put the word irony in my copy in fear that I'll misuse it horribly. The nuances of what constitutes and what doesn't constitute irony is sometimes beyond my grasp.

There are about 17 schools of thought on how irony should be used. It's best to avoid at all turns.

Misused constantly on the Internet = meme
Misused constantly in sports writing and broadcasting = scuffle
Inexplicably stupid expression used in sports writing and broadcasting = on the night or on the season

i never use it professionally, but just wing it the fuck out there on a personal level even when i know it's wrong ... cause i could give two shits. if somebody calls me on it, i use ijag's line: "thanks for the correction, professor."

So, would it be ironic for IJAG to get snarky when someone corrects her about something?

    whyfuckingnot?

i toss out the "man, that sure was ironic" when i know damn good and well it wasn't all the time. 99.9 people out of 100 have no idea i use it wrong. i have no shame using that word in any manner in which i wish, as long as it doesn't show up in print with my name on it.
