Women's 100 meter final in Sydney

Below is a list of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games
    women's 100 meter finalists.

Notice that the athletes other than Marion Jones
in the 100 meter race were all from small countries that do not
    have independent anti-doping federations. Greece,
Jamaica, Bahamas and Ukraine. In my opinion, the
overwhelming majority, if not 100% of these women, had
used performance enhancing drugs before the 2000
Olympic Games. In short, two of them were associated
with BALCO and all of the others came from countries
that did not require their athletes to be subjected to
out-of competition drug testing before the Olympics.
The athletes from these small countries have a green light to use
as many performance enhancing drugs as they like during
the off season. The silver medalist Thanou from Greece
allegedly received undetectable steroids and missed three
drug tests for which she was suspended. No matter what
the IOC decides to do, it is likely that someone other than
Jones who used drugs will receive an Olympic medal.

    100
    Final
1, Marion Jones, Los Angeles, 10.75.
    2, Ekaterini Thanou, Greece, 11.12.
    3, Tanya Lawrence, Jamaica, 11.18.
    4, Merlene Ottey, Jamaica, 11.19.
    5, Zhanna Pintusevych, Ukraine, 11.20.
    6, Chandra Sturrup, Bahamas, 11.21.
    7, Sevatheda Fynes, Bahamas, 11.22.
    8, Debbie Ferguson, Bahamas, 11.29.

So what should we do? Let everyone cheat at will? Concede that everyone there probably did and that stripping Jones doesn't solve anything? Invalidate all the results? I honestly don't know. It's an interesting fodder to debate though.

Good bit of "investigative" reporting, cremora.
    Good info to ponder.

Not only were the other seven women in the Sydney 100 meter final not sujected to out of competition drug testing, they were also not subjected to the investigative tools of law enforcement like Jones. Is there really a level playing field at this point? All participants in the race were also competing against an Olympic and world record set by Flo-Jo in 1988. These records were set before out of competition drug testing started in 1990. Were Jones and the others on the same playing field as Flo-Jo? These are simply ideas for discussion. I'm of the opinion that these issues should be considered by Olympic governing body officials.

Maybe you should call Dick Pound, creamora, and see what he thinks.

Maybe we should just get rid of the Olympics.

    Who's with me?

    Good Doctor,

Are you suggesting that Mr. Pound is capable of fixing this massive and historic problem?

It's time to bring back the Goodwill Games.

You likely would be able to answer that question better than I. But I do know when Dick Pound says anything, the AP will run a story on it.

Mr. Pound is going to step down very soon. You are certainly right about his media savvy. He's done a lot to bring attention to the long standing problem of the rampant use of drugs at the elite level of sport. He has not done much about the huge loopholes in drug testing.

How bout we just do the all-drug Olympics, like the old SNL skit:

    He's pulled his arms off!!!
