With the AP AWOL, how will you handle the Tiger sex rehab story?

Tiger/Jeter are sports figures. That's what put them in the public eye. That's their prime source of income and what put them in position to make the endorsement money. Sports pages is where their accomplishments/foibles should be reported.

Disagree. If Tiger or Jeter do something as an athlete, like win the Masters or the World Series, put it on the sports pages. When they do something as a celebrity, like get married or go into sex rehab, put it on the gossip pages.

What about if they get arrested? Braylon Edwards' fight shouldn't go on a national site or in a sports section because his fight wasn't on field?

What about if they get sued?

So you didn't run Plaxico in your section at all during his gun issues? His sentencing went in your news section?

As long as Tiger or Jeter don't get deliberate penalties so they could get in the penalty box all by themselves ....

    ^^^ This.

Of course, I guess you could treat it like a coaching search at Big State U and run every rumor floating around.

What makes them "celebrities" is their accomplishments in the world of sports. Jeter is a "celebrity" because he's the shortstop with the New York Yankees. Woods is a "celebrity" because he's the world's best golfer. Those are sports accomplishments. Sports is their point of reference.

Welp, The National Enquirer has a string of photos of somebody outside the sex rehab place in MS.

Go to radaronline to see the lot of them if you don't feel like clicking on the National Enquirer.

Possible these are fake? Sure. So I'll post one without further comment.

Snippet of editorial from the Hattiesburg paper:<blockquote>The American published a story in Saturday's edition noting there were unconfirmed reports of Woods being in the Pine Belt and that some TV stations had sent news crews to cover it. We felt we needed a story to address the spreading rumors.

Since Saturday, the American has not published any reports on Woods possibly being here.

And, unless there is some confirmation from the clinic or Woods himself, we don't intend to assign a reporter/photographer team to this story.

If something happens that warrants coverage, we'll have it.

There is a fine line between covering Woods when he wrecks his car and extending coverage when and if he gets treatment.

Where does news end and privacy begin, even if the person involved is one of the most recognizable faces in the world? That's a question that journalists debate constantly.

One of the tenets of the Society of Professional Journalists' Code of Ethics states: "Show good taste. Avoid pandering to lurid curiosity."

We believe Woods deserves some privacy if he is getting treatment in Hattiesburg - or in Arizona or South Africa, as other online sites have reported in the last couple of weeks.

And we believe other patients at the clinic also deserve to be left alone.</blockquote>http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=20101190302

The American ran AP last year when Southern Miss won the Super Regionals in Gainesville.
    I was floored.
