Author of the best summary of Hollywood and indeed of all human endeavor. "Nobody knows anything."

Another popular culture giant gone. RIP. Penned one of my all-time favorite movies, All the President's Men.

The Princess Bride, both the book and the movie, are two of my favourite pieces of art ever.

    As you wish, Mr. Goldman.

    A book?

That's right. When I was your age, television was called books. And this is a special book. It was the book my father used to read to me when I was sick, and I used to read it to your father. And today I'm gonna read it to you.

Has it got any sports in it?

Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles. ...

Doesn't sound too bad. I'll try and stay awake.

Oh, well, thank you very much, very nice of you. Your vote of confidence is overwhelming

How many scripts do you think he worked on beyond the ones he's credited with? Probably hundreds.

The first Goldman I ever read was the Butch and Sundance screenplay. I picked it up, glanced at it, bought it. It's absolutely wonderfully written.

If you have not read his Adventures in the Screen Trade, you should. He did a lot of screen doctoring late in life, mostly uncredited.

Goldman claimed that dialog was one of the least important parts of film. Funny this came from a man who wrote so many indelible bits of film dialogue.

    "Follow the money."

    "Is it safe?"

    "My name is Inigo Montoya..."

"You fool, the fall will probably kill you!"

William Goldman has been mostly dead all day.
