Will we see another player/manager or player/coach?

There haven't been very many ex-pitchers in recent years who were managers period.

John Farrell and Bud Black are the only former pitchers managing right now. I think pitchers are viewed as too far outside the daily grind of baseball to be managers.

    (Thanks, nattering nabob.)

  3. Also, Bud Black of the Padres.

Black has two hitting coaches to compensate. Not that they appear to have been terribly effective.

You would think some skinflint who dumps his manager in mid-August would try this to save a buck on finishing a 70-92 clunker.

Think Tree Rollins was a player/asst coach for Orlando about 10 years ago or so.

Dana Barros was an assistant for the Celtics in 2004, then played one game and scored six points.

Well before that, there was this:

So if in MLB you have a player/manager, and say he's playing first, does a visit to the mound count against the managerial visits?

I remember this was an issue with Rose. If I remember right, he had the same rules as a non-playing manager. One time to the mound, then after that, he had to take the pitcher out, unless it was an injury situation.

That could make it rough if the player/manager is the catcher. Especially on one of those unwritten baseball etiquette rules where the catcher goes to the mound to chat with the pitcher if the umpire gets hit by a foul tip.
