"Legalization would create more integrity in the sporting world. It would bring with it an influx of outside oversight, on both the sports leagues and the gambling community."

These leagues don't shy away from fantasy leagues, but sports betting would harm the integrity of the sport? Pfft.

The fear, of course, is big-time gamblers getting to the players to alter outcomes of games. That isn't really a factor with fantasy leagues. However, given the fact that illegal betting has been rampant forever (and would likely continue even if sports gambling was legal), I'm not sure how legalizing sports betting would change anything.

That was true in the old days, when athletes weren't making as much money or the fear of a private-life scandal could convince someone to be persuaded. Nowadays, there's little shame in scandals and athletes make so much money, they'd be fools to give it up.

College athletes, on the other hand ...

It is still a concern regardless of the contracts. Pro athletes run through money extremely fast. How many have gone broke or been sued for unpaid debts? And that group includes big stars who you would think would never have to worry about money.
