Why is iTunes continuing to "verify" my iPod?

Hoping to get some tech help here. My 160Gb iPod was running like a top until yesterday when I tried to sync some new music to it and create a new playlist. It shows it is connected then spends forever "verifying" before random songs come up and say they can't be synced with the (-50) error message.

I updated to the latest iTunes software, reset my iPod, started iTunes in safe mode and created another user, but the problem still remains. I did a Google search and there are others with the problem, but the fixes seem to be all over the place. Never reset my sync history or done a restore. Anybody done that before?

Anyone else seen this or have any idea how to fix it?

Thanks. I'll hang up and listen.
