Why do police composite sketches never look even vaguely human?

Apparently in St. Louis, some sort of human-turtle hybrid is molesting girls.

I've always thought of that job as being really difficult. You're asking people to tell you everything about a person that just did something horrible to them. Then you're attempting to accurately draw a person you've never seen. Then you're forced to show these people a drawing of a face you hope resembles the person who just did something horrible to them. Then you ask for constructive criticism.

I thought for sure the sketch was going to look like this:

As a California native, the police sketch that is completely ingrained in my brain is that of the Night Stalker, who terrorized the entire state when I was a kid, probably 9 or 10.

I remember that sketch proved to be remarkably accurate.

My guess: Because people aren't line drawings.

In Cartoonland, the suspect sketches are surprisingly photo-realistic.

Is offended about being "turtle profiled."
