Why can't anyone spell D-E-F-I-N-I-T-E-L-Y?

Also ... "its" and "it's," and "their" and "they're."

Just no damn reason not to understand the difference. IT IS, THEY ARE.

Ooh, can I play? How about the plural form of a name like Jones? Anyone?

    Joneses!

Not, as THREE of our reporters have done recently, Jones'.

Seriously. Forget journalism school. How did anyone get out of fourth grade doing that?

Misspelling a word is a much bigger sin than the other stuff. Step one: spell the fucking word correctly. And to answer the question, definitely and lose have to be the two most commonly misspelled words in the English language. Idiots spell it "defiantly", and those who are a little better go with "definately". But there's hope. Every time I catch someone misspelling definitely I will get ahold of them and tell them to think "infinite, finite, definite, definitely" when they use the word. Thinking about the root word there did the trick for me and a few people I've talked to.

There are 300,000,000 people in this country.

At last count, about four know how to spell "supersede" correctly.

But how many of us use that word more than once a decade?

For whatever reason, I've always had trouble with "especially." Thank God for spellcheck.

Can we ban the phrase "sneak peek" before someone sneaks another mountaintop?

Um, because they're using all caps?

  11. The misuse of apostrophes is an epidemic in this country, I swear.

In my children's school, the restrooms are labeled boy's and girl's toilet.

    Drives me crazy.

    I also loathe "cancelled"

Ding-ding-ding. Of course, I'm usually going off when it's used in boy's basketball and girl's basketball. ;)
