Nice choice by friend of the friendless.

I'll add my top-shelf obscure band: Kitchens of Distinction. "The Death of Cool" and "Strange Free World" are two fantastic CDs.

Obscure? Wait, let me check the music thread and pick a name, because I don't know obscure.

David Garza. One of Austin's locals, saw him perform at a bar on South Padre Island years ago. For quite a while he had an album that was the soundtrack of my early 20s.

I'll second Guster, out of the Cambridge-Somerville, Mass. area. Their live album is incredible.

Somewhere in my collection are well-played albums by:

    Aztec Two-Step

    The Brandos

    The Lamont Cranston Band

    Marshall Chapman

    The Dillards

Gary P. Nunn (The London Homesick Blues)

    David Bromberg

    LouAnn Barton

    Valerie Carter

    Molly and the Heymakers

And several others who have faded from memory, although their musix c lives on.

    You beat me to it.

Think early Smashing Pumpkins without the urge to slap the shit out of Billy Corgan.

You and I would do well hanging out together in some honky tonk bar.
    I'll add:
    Alejandro Escovedo
Lucinda Williams (not obscure to many, but to the general public)
Ryan Adams (not obscure to many, but to the general public)
Whiskeytown (yes I know they're defunct)
Uncle Tupelo (yes I know they're defunct)
The Replacement (yes I know they're defunct)
    Drive-By Truckers
    Chris Knight
    X (yes I know they're defunct)
The Blasters (yes I know they're defunct)
    Dave Alvin
    Kelly Willis
    Kathleen Edwards
    Brandi Carlisle
    Garrison Starr
    Clare Burson
    Ron Sexsmith
    Cross Canadian Ragweed
    Reckless Kelly
Slobberbone (yes I know they're defunct)
    The Drams
    Josh Ritter
    Will Kimbrough
and so many, so many, so many others ...

Just saw the Two Step at an anniversary show for their first album. Never a big fan, but it was a nice night out.
My nominees, at the moment, are:

    Guy Clark
    Jimmie Dale Gilmore
    The Kentucky Headhunters

Emmylou does a great live cover of Clark's "New cut road" on the CD of "Quarter Moon."

He and Delbert are two of my faves.

As far as ATS goes, I always thought my first novel would be called "Dancers All," one of the best songs on their self-titled LP. Didn't know they're still around but I haven't been in the DC area for 30 years.

Heard her leading off for Train last summer. She was outstanding.

Don't know if Anna Nalick can qualify anymore, but...
