I would say no.

How the hell is a soldier going to determine "far beyond any hope of survival," with the confidence to put three bullets in the guy's head? This isn't a deer hit on the side of the road.

I don't know. Without getting graphic, I imagine combat-experienced soldiers can have a very good idea that a guy doesn't have a chance to survive. Although, I suppose, a heavy dose of morphine would also serve the purpose.

Cran, I was wondering the same thing earlier. I certainly don't think it's likely, but given the lack of almost anything concrete about what happened, I guess you can't rule it out.

Jay, do you have any linkable evidence that backs this theory that Tillman was planning on coming back as a vocal anti-war activist?

I can't find the link, but soon after Tillman's death (within the first year) there was an article in the SF Chronicle that addressed these things. He actually had an appointment to meet with Noam Chomsky the next time he was supposed to be back in the country. Tillman was vehemently against the Iraq War (called it an illegal war), not the Afghanistan stuff.

It's down fairly far in this article, but his mother says Pat intended to meet with Chomsky.

Yet other Tillman family members are less reluctant to show Tillman’s unique character, which was more complex than the public image of a gung-ho patriotic warrior. He started keeping a journal at 16 and continued the practice on the battlefield, writing in it regularly. (His journal was lost immediately after his death.) Mary Tillman said a friend of Pat’s even arranged a private meeting with Chomsky, the antiwar author, to take place after his return from Afghanistan — a meeting prevented by his death. She said that although he supported the Afghan war, believing it justified by the Sept. 11 attacks, “Pat was very critical of the whole Iraq war.”

Baer, who served with Tillman for more than a year in Iraq and Afghanistan, told one anecdote that took place during the March 2003 invasion as the Rangers moved up through southern Iraq.

“I can see it like a movie screen,” Baer said. “We were outside of (a city in southern Iraq) watching as bombs were dropping on the town. We were at an old air base, me, Kevin and Pat, we weren’t in the fight right then. We were talking. And Pat said, ‘You know, this war is so f— illegal.’ And we all said, ‘Yeah.’ That’s who he was. He totally was against Bush.”

Another soldier in the platoon, who asked not to be identified, said Pat urged him to vote for Bush’s Democratic opponent in the 2004 election, Sen. John Kerry.

Thanks. Interesting stuff, but I'd still say it's quite a leap to speculate from that and a Chomsky appointment that he was eliminated to keep him quiet. I'm not ready to carry my distrust of our government quite that far ....at least not yet.

This isn't paranoia land. Tillman was murdered by members of the US Army.
One theory is that they shot him by accident, and then in a panic, they killed him and destroyed the evidence. But that's still murder, it wasn't a friendly fire accident.
But another theory is that they knew what they were doing because the best PR situation they could have was about to become a disaster. Tillman was going home and was going to speak out against the war.

The first of those two is so much more believable than the second.
If don't believe the Army would order the "execution" of Tillman, or any soldier. But if you want to go with the idea that they would, they wouldn't have it carried out with Army-issued weapons. This isn't Beetle Bailey we're talking about.

Exactly. I mean, you think when these guys got ambushed, someone said to himself, "Hey, this is a perfect time to kill Tillman!." Maybe folks believe the ambush was rigged, too. Maybe the whole war has been faked like landing on the moon.Was Tillman just a modern-day Capt. Tuttle from MASH?
