Sorry, but Zow wasn't the most popular quarterback at Alabama -- and didn't play on the best teams. He was far from a bad quarterback and was handicapped by that fucking idiot in the picture with him.

    Pssst....
    Three Bags... yeah, you... c'mere....

Whole point of the photo was to show that the school, while having a rich history, also had a period where it sucked -- at least for a National Power... 24-23 in a four year period -- WITH a 10-3 season thrown in...
Just because Zow's numbers were OK doesn't mean the team was... 35 touchdowns in a career is a decent season at some schools.

    Love ya...

if you're going by wins, which by and large is a pretty good assessment (I think this list is up-to-date, but I'm not certain):
    1. Michigan
    2. Notre Dame
    3. Nebraska
    4. Texas
    5. Ohio State
    6. Alabama
    7. Penn State
    8. Oklahoma
    9. Tennessee
    10. USC
    11. Georgia
    12. LSU
    13. Syracuse
    14. Auburn
    15. Colorado
    16. Washington
    17. West Virginia
    18. Miami (OH)
    19. Georgia Tech
    20. Texas A/M

i'd probably rearrange that list somewhat if I wanted to reflect the most prestigious programs -- like putting Notre Dame No. 1 -- plus recent history has to count for something, so I'd want to bring florida, FSU and Miami in somewhere. I feel like Army and/or navy need to be in the top 20 somewhere too.

interesting that Miami Ohio is on the all-time wins list, huh?

It's kind of like Andrew Zow leading Alabama in so many categories. Play long enough and you'll be on some list. Miami's been playing football forever and even survived Tim Rose... And on a personal note, I can say while I never attended Miami, I did see one of the last games at Miami Field and the first at Yager Stadium....

I thought the intent of that photo was to make fun of that fucking idiot, not Zow. nonetheless, neither of them were all that great.

as far as the miami thing, that's not a school that comes to mind when I think of the top 20 division I programs. it's probably top 30-50 but its national reputation doesn't stand up next to the others in that top 20.

From a list in my 2002 Information Please sports almanac, coupled with google-based research on the AP final poll of the past five seasons, here is what the All-Time AP Top 15 looks like. the almanac scored the Top 20 each year (1st=20 points . . . 20th=1 point) the AP poll was released.

Team Score [Ap National Titles; Top 10s; Top 20s]

    1. Notre Dame 648 [8; 35; 47]
    2. Michigan 646 [2; 36; 52]
    3. Oklahoma 645 [7; 35; 47]
    4. Alabama 587 [6; 32; 44]
    5. Ohio State 573 [4; 27; 45]
    6. Nebraska 548 [4; 30; 42]
    7. Texas 491 [3; 23; 38]
    8. USC 490 [5; 24; 40]
    9. Tennessee 464 [2; 22; 39]
    10. Penn State 426 [2; 22; 37]
    11. U. of Miami 358 [5; 17; 29]
    12t. Florida State 330 [2; 16; 23]
    12t. LSU 330 [1; 17; 29]
    14. UCLA 327 [0; 16; 30]
    15. Georgia 319 [1; 18; 28]

    Close: 16. Auburn 317 [1; 15; 30]; 17. Arkansas 267 [0; 13; 25]; 18. Florida 266 [1; 13; 23].

  12. This is from Christopher Walsh (didn't I just do this with something else?) - the Tuscaloosa News Best College Football Poll is my project, and I'll be happy to answer any questions.

As for a couple of things already listed, yes, we only used AP national championships, and no, the whole thing is definitely not weighted toward Alabama (what good would that do?). In fact, it wasn't until after we picked the categories, had the entire methodology set and had the lists for eight categories set in stone (we were waiting on the final two - recruiting and academics) that I started adding things up.

We're releasing one team a week until we get down to the final five, then it's one a day near the end of August. Wisconsin is No. 25, and Clemson is No. 24.

Oh, and as for my personal bias - I attended the University of New Hampshire. For some strange reason my Wildcats didn't make the Top 25 in any category.
