    There was a race-walker a few years back. And I know there have been some Europeans. It's easy to talk about the tragedy of it, the obsession etc. - but I also think statistically, Olympic athletes aren't any more or any less likely to fall victim to depression.

    I covered one whose career was winding down. My shop was half a continent away and it turned into a clusterfuck there pretty quickly. From my catbird seat it was part of a long summer of writing obituaries for men who were mostly young enough to be my kids. On the ground at work, it was sad to see what it did to those who knew and loved him.
