I was as big a Goldwater guy as you ever saw -- though it was in large part because I despised Lyndon Johnson, and still do.

George H.W. Bush seems like a decent fellow. I respect men like Baker and Scowcroft for not blindly following the party line on Iraq under Bush 43. Someone else said Hatch; that's not a bad answer. From a media standpoint, Andrew Sullivan is a must-read, and not simply because he saw the light on Iraq. Bill Weld was my kind of Republican -- more libertarian, less socially conservative; too bad he had no real interest in governing Massachusetts.

Hagel. McCain. Most of what's left of the moderate Republican senator wing from New England (Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins). Michael Bloomberg.

It would be easier to cite one of the dwindling number of moderate Republicans, but I think the spirit of the question goes more to the unexpected choice. For me, that's Lindsay Graham. I disagree with him on 21 out of 20 random issues, but he sounds like he's not just reciting talking points when I've heard him.
