I am a recurring fictional character on television.

I have appeared as this character on eight American television series. So far.

All portrayed by the same actor (in the gender-neutral sense of the word).

No. I will say that this actor is still alive.

Is it Richard Belzer, who portrays Detective John Munch?

    Law & Order: SVU - 158-plus
    Homicide - 122
    Law & Order (original) - 4
    The X-Files - 1
Law & Order: Trial by Jury: 1
Arrested Development: 1 (also appeared once as himself)
    The Beat (UPN) - 1
    Sesame Street - 1

He is said to be the only fictional character to appear on eight programs – and those were spread across four networks.

Nothing from me, except honest approbation. Or something like that.

I just ran across that and decided, as in Jeopardy, to phrase it in the form of a question.

    Good night!

Wow. I knew about the first five. I never would have guessed the other three.

Even so, I figured it had to be Belzer.
