I've heard tell that the infield at the Indy 500 can take on a Lord of the Flies quality.

 

That was true until Tony George remodeled it all away with the golf course, F1 course, and now, the MotoGP course. There really isn't a debauched infield atmosphere at the 500 anymore.

Which is why I'm glad my first 500 in '88 was spent in the good, old snakepit. In its day, it was the Kentucky Derby cubed.
