    No Gram Parsons fans here?

In South Carolina, there's many a tall pine. . ."

    Hickory Wind. Anyone?

Anyway, because of that song, I say South Carolina.

The "Order of the Longleaf Pine" is the highest honor that can be given to a North Carolinian. So, I'll go with that.

Plus, I raked, and raked, and raked more than my share of pine needles while growing up in NC.

Both of my associations with pine trees come from my first visits to a state.

Colorado: I remember driving around Woodland Park with the windows in the car opened, and I was overwhelmed by the scent of pine.

Maine: My parents and I drove from Portland to Bar Harbor one summer and my father said, "Jesus Christ, I didn't drive all this way to look at pine trees on my vacation."

Can we include Canadian provinces, too? Because despite absolutely loving Nova Scotia, he felt that way during part of the drive from Yarmouth to Halifax, too.

    Florida.

They're all over the damn place, except my front yard. Five of 'em taken out. Still all over the neighborhood and when you get out of town Florida has lots of pine forests.

    The Evergreen State

(although, it's only fair to point out we have mostly firs, not pines)

I will be the first to mention Arizona. Arizona, really? It's all cacti, right? Not up north. Stands and stands of Ponderosa pine in the mountains. I miss that place sometimes ...

The hallmark Oregon and Washington tree is a Douglas fir.

    I think Virginia.

'Mid the pines and rolling hills
    Stand the halls we cheer,
    Hallowed place our memory fills,
    Alma Mater, dear.

    Alma Mater, gracious name
    We thy children praise
Home of Honor, Worth and Fame
    Love we all our days.

Hail to thee, hail to thee,
    Hail to Red and Blue!
    To thy hallowed memory
    May we e'er be true!
