Which athletes/celebrities would you want your kids to look up to?

    Aside from Jetes, of course.

I don't have kids, but I've said before that I'm glad my nephew is a huge John Cena fan. Cena is by all accounts a great guy and is presented as a great role model.

When I was a kid, I idolized Dr. J. I'd be perfectly content to have a child who did the same with a similar athlete today.

None of them. They will all let you down. Lance Armstrong was the last straw for me.

Have to agree with POO. Five years ago, Tiger Woods would have been a fine answer to this question. Ten years ago, Mark McGwire.

The best you can hope from an athlete is that he keeps his nose clean (figuratively and literally) and lives quietly in retirement. Even a guy like Elway who rode off into the sunset and had about the only perfect retirement there is, his personal life was a wreck -- and in a public way -- after he retired.

no kids -- nephews and a niece.

the oldest nephew will be 7. big into hockey -- likes malkin, and that seems okay. malkin's got a great story to tell. otherwise the kid kinda likes a bunch of players and teams. his brothers are two and a half, so ...

the niece is two and a half too, and man girl role models are scary. i can't think of one she should legitimately model. i think that's got to be the toughest thing about raising girls nowadays.

They don't really listen to you. I sure didn't care who my parents wanted me to like when I was 12.

I hope my children won't idolize any celebrity or athlete. I will teach them that it is great to be a fan but athletes and celebrities are not to be idolized.

My kids will not wear a team jersey that has the name of a player on the back.

Looking up to Tim Duncan = cool
Looking up to Tebow = get out of my house

I don't think I ever had anyone as a hero when I was a kid. I liked Thurman Munson. I liked some writers and musicians. I liked some historical figures.
But I never really went through any hero-worship phases.

Oh, I'm not saying Cena doesn't do good. He absolutely does. I was just disputing the "by all accounts" aspect of it.

No one's perfect. I wouldn't want them to be.

Well, being a kid, I guess... Chipper's been hero #1 and Peyton's been hero #2..both since 1995. Before then, it was Jay Barker.
