We are pretty locked in to July. Appreciate the suggestions so far. If anyone wants to elaborate on theirs, it would be helpful.

For purposes of proximity, let's limit to central and mountain time zones.

They don't call them flyover states for nothing!

(Kidding, I am a flyover state native)

    Pine Cove/Idyllwild, Calif.

About an hour and a half from L.A. I was recommended this area by OTD when I visited SoCal a few years ago. It's at elevation, so it's very temperate in the summer and it looks and feels like a little enclave of NoCal stuck in the south. Lots of big trees and very pretty. They had a big fire a couple of years ago (the Esperanza fire, I believe), but it passed well to the north of Pine Cove.

The weird thing about it is, drive around the mountain to Palm Springs and suddenly you're in the balls-hot desert.

Those violate the "ungodly hot in July" stipulation ...

I was going to suggest Cooperstown, though airport proximity might be an issue

Isn't damn near every city ungodly hot in July?

The Detroit Free Press just ran a Sunday focal on great places to rent vacation houses for cheap this past week.

If you do decide on Michigan, I'd suggest the Sand Dunes at Silver Lake, or Higgins Lake in Roscommon. It may be one of the cleanest, nicest lakes around. Pretty chill area.

Traverse City is also real solid.

If you are looking for really cheap getaways in Michigan, try Caseville/Port Austin and rent a lakefront cottage
