Where does Paul Thomas Anderson rank?

I think it's time start pondering this, as I'm sure others here are.

Days later, I still can't get "The Master" out of my head. I want to see it again on the big screen, and that's very rare for me. I think the last movie I saw twice at the theater was "Eternal Sunshin of the Spotless Mind." Before that, "The Others."

I'm not looking for necessarily precise rankings, because I think that can be crass when it comes to art. But is he approaching the luminaries at this point? Work to do still?

I need to first ponder who Paul Thomas Anderson is before ranking him.

Do you realize that I knew exactly what this post was going to say when I saw your reply? :)

Who is already in your pantheon of luminaries? What's our yardstick here?

Let's keep it to post-WWII American directors and say, Kubrick, Scorsese, Wilder, Hitchcock, Coens, Eastwood, Coppola, Spielberg, and Stone, just for starters. Is he in that club yet?

He ranks highly among the people not in my kitchen. But not nearly as high as any of the directors on your list.

    I don't think so.

And there are lots of names missing before you could include Eastwood or Stone on a list with Kubrick and Wilder and Hitchcock.

    Frank Capra?

    Woody Allen?

    This is fun!
