    Blame your grandparents for this one...

    My grandfather insisted up until the day that he died that nobody he ever met was gay, even though his hospice worker who he saw every day for the last three years of his life was "flaming gay" and spoke of his "partner" often...

    We would always laugh at his obvious ignorance, but that's the biggest reason why politicians are opposed to it. Gay marriage creeps old people out and old people vote more than any other demographic group...

    As time passes, maybe a decade or so, we'll find that people in general care less about this topic.

    Of course, this isn't the only time it has happened.
    We're the same country that allowed slavery and racial segregation while putting "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal" in our Declaration of Independence.
