What's the worst state in the Union?

Haven't been to the deep south, so I can't speak to the likely candidates down there.

I can say that outside of Las Vegas, Nevada is an unbelievable shithole.

The California coast saves it from any serious consideration as the worst state.

Jersey, WV, most of the Deep South, Ohio - I'd have a tough time choosing.

You need to cross the river more often, dre, and learn all the good things about jersey.

I've definitely enjoyed some of my trips there, but the bad stuff outweighs that in my mind.

Also, my home state of PA should definitely be up there on people's lists. Outside of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, it doesn't have much to offer.

The prettiest women in the world.

But you're right, Mississippi doesn't seem to have much going for it. Still, any time I leave the state I get a feeling of contentment when I return. What can I say? It's home.

We asked something similar in 2008 but subbed "most backwards" for "worst"

Oklahoma's pretty awful. That drive down U.S. 69/75 from I-44 to the Texas line contains some of the ugliest non-scenery ever. Even Lake Eufaula manages to be ugly.

My sister once said of all the trailers scattered about, "Do all these people live here because this is where they ran out of gas?"

North Dakota called to remind us it still has most of our missile silos and really doesn't want to hear any more negative comments about it.

Perhaps we need some baseline criteria to help with ratings:

    In no particular order...

    1. Liveability
    2. Culture
    3. Scenery
    4. Crime (or absence of)
    5. General intelligence of residents
    6. Economic viability
    7. History
    8. Attractiveness of residents
    9. How likely is Stern to fix a NBA finals for your home team
