What's the future of sports news?

I have a Twitter account and follow several prominent and not-so prominent sports writers who fight tooth and nail to be the first to put out information via blogs or Twitter. My question is what's the big hurry to put out FREE information? Neither the writer nor the organization won't receive a dime from collecting the information and by the time the newspaper rolls off the press the next morning all the sports news is old. Ray Charles could see that this business model isn't working, so why are they sticking to it?

What else are they going to do? Executives at my paper think community blogs are the answer. If that's the best solution they can come up with, the company is toast.
