The strikeout or the shift? There are fewer balls being put in play than ever in MLB, and when they are put in play, teams have so often shifted into the ideal position that we're seeing fewer base hits.

So, SJ, which one is worse for the game - the strikeout or the shift?

Strikeouts. At least a ball in play has the possibility of something happening: Hits a divot, bobbled exchange, overthrow, weird bounce. Beats a dude swinging with both cheeks for an outcome that may happen 4 percent of the time. 6 percent if he's had an exceptional year.

The answer to both the shift and the strikeout is the same: Become a better fucking hitter. Teach kids to hit to both fields. Make contact. Have a fucking approach. The shift sucks but there's a reason why it works. And it will keep working until hitters start coming up who make the shift ineffective.
