There are only two movies I ever watched and afterward thought, "Holy shit, what did I just see?" -- Pulp Fiction and The Usual Suspects.

And as someone mentioned earlier, Shawshank wasn't revelatory in any way, but it was just a great movie to watch. Because of the subject matter, it wasn't fun, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable movie-watching experience.

This was my first year out of college. I worked afternoons six days a week, so I would catch a matinee and then head into work. Probably saw more movies in the summer of 94' than all other years combined.
Also it was a hot summer and I didn't have air conditioning, so the movies were awesome.

I didn't go to the movies often at the time, so most of these I saw well after they were released.

'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective' = Liked it.

    'Blue Chips' = Hated it.

'Bullets Over Broadway' = Saw it in the theater. Loved it but not as much as 'Manhattan Murder Mystery' the year before.

'Clear and Present Danger' = Standard action stuff. Meh.

    'Clerks' = Loved it.

'The Crow' = All look and no substance.

'Dumb and Dumber' = Liked it.

    'Ed Wood' = Loved it.

'Forrest Gump' = Good but not great.

'Four Weddings and a Funeral' = Never saw it.

    'Hoop Dreams' = Very good.

'Interview with the Vampire' = Had read the book in college. Disappointed in movie.

'Legends of the Fall' = Never thought much of it.

'The Lion King' = Never saw it.

'Natural Born Killers' = Hated it. Really hated it.

'The Paper' = Liked it. Rewatched it years later and didn't like it.

'Pulp Fiction' = Still love it. One of the few movies I will rewatch.

'The Shawshank Redemption' = Very good.

'Speed' = Tried to watch it on cable. It was too stupid. I turned it off.

'True Lies' = Was OK. Didn't understand the love for it at the time.

    'Quiz Show' = Very good.

'The Client' = Never saw it.

'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective' = Loved it. Just laughed my ass off.

'Blue Chips' = I didn't hate it as much as I should have.

'Bullets Over Broadway' = Thought it was well-done, but not my cup of tea.

'Clear and Present Danger' = Liked it. Was what I expected...

'Clerks' = Loved it. Saw it multiple times in the theater.

'The Crow' = Saw it, was a bit creeped out about it because of the whole Brandon Lee tragedy. Well made, great soundtrack.

    'Dumb and Dumber' = Hilarious.

'Ed Wood' = A truly great movie that holds up.

'Forrest Gump' = Good on initial viewing, does not hold up at all.

'Four Weddings and a Funeral' = Saw it, thought it was OK.

    'Hoop Dreams' = Outstanding

'Interview with the Vampire' = Liked it more than I thought I would. Loved the book.

'Legends of the Fall' = Well done.

'The Lion King' = An instant classic.

'Natural Born Killers' = Liked it a lot.

'The Paper' = I realize I'm in the minority, but I hated it.

'Pulp Fiction' = Top 5 all time.

    'The Shawshank Redemption' = Outstanding.

'Speed' = Thoroughly enjoyed it. A bit of a guilty pleasure.

'True Lies' = Truly enjoyable. A very funny good action flick. I wish they made more like this.

    'Quiz Show' = Outstanding

'The Client' = Typical Grisham movie...

Yeah, that was a hell of a year for movies.

Went with Clerks, Pulp Fiction and Natural Born Killers, but Shawshank and Hoop Dreams were great, too.

The three I picked all were seen in the movie theater, and the reactions of others in the audience was part of what made seeing them great.

No texting or smart phones during the show in those days, youngsters ...

Looks like our polls pretty much gets it right. IMO, Pulp Fiction and Shawshank were plainly the two best that year. Hoop Dreams was equally tremendous, and my third choice, but as a documentary form pic, I can see why it didn't get as many votes.

Also give a nod to Quiz Show as the most underrated flick here. And to Dumb and Dumber as the best comedy.

And I'll second the prior recommendation of Leon: the Professional as the best one left out. Great flick. Should've been one of the choices.

And NBK was hideously awful self-indulgent dreck. The worst movie I saw in 94. It bothers me that some here picked it.

Hoop Dreams just blew me away; as someone said, I had no idea where it would go. 2.5 hours after it started I was utterly disappointed I had to leave the theatre.

Pulp Fiction was pure fun. Someone above had described my Reservoir Dogs experience perfectly, I went in had no idea what it was about and BAM, fantastic.

I think The Lion King is a lot closer to the top than this poll suggests. Not that it displaces the top two, but I think if we had more female members, it might get a little more support.

I think the last half-hour or so of NBK (from the prison riot to the end) is entertaining. The rest of the movie is shit.
