    Polaroid actually went broke and out of business.

    And someone bought the name for only $65 million, which given its name recognition was a steal. It's a pretty common strategy with these brands that have such good name recognition, and if you keep your costs down, you pretty much have bought yourself a cash cow. They don't do anything to market their products -- they just rely on the name recognition -- and they don't bother trying to fund R&D anymore or come up with new products. They spend as little as possible. They just manufacture cheap cameras, pop the Polaroid name on it and they sell because people know the name. Sharper Image was another company that got bought up that way. They went out of business last year, but someone almost immediately bought the name and is now marketing products under it.

    I'm pretty sure a lot of the old-school cheap lagers that have been making a comeback (PBR, Schlitz, Hamm's, Narragansett) are still produced under a similar relationship even though their initial brewers have gone out of business.
