You need a broker to purchase $200 worth of a mutual fund?

Is this a themed party? Was there any figure or character on the invitation? If so, use that as the basis for a gift.

As far as getting something for the parents, while that seems noble, I'd be ticked if it were my kid. This is the kid's birthday, not mine. Get him something he'd enjoy.

You can offer the babysitting on my birthday.

    A puppy. :D

Preferably, a chocolate Lab that not only retrieves ducks, but points pheasants and quail, too.

Call the mutual fund company and say, "Hey, this is sc, I'd like to open an Education IRA. Can you send me the paperwork? Here's my $200 bucks."

I do that on Christmas. They also love tinker toys and anything that's painful when you step on it.

    Legos.

Those are the absolute worst toy to step on. :'(

I also agree with the books idea. My kids loved those soft cloth books and the board books when they were toddlers.

Thanks for the ideas everybody...it really does help.

Question, keeping in mind that I don't even know how to balance a checkbook: If I were to go the savings bond route, what is the best way to do it?

  11. For a one-year old? How about

    - Pretty Peggy Ear-Piercing Set
    - Mr. Skin-Grafter
    - General Tron's Secret Police Confession Kit
