There's a big difference in scale, though.
    21 percent of Americans smoke.
65.4 percent of Americans are overweight.
31 percent of Americans are obese.

Buck, and fat people still don't put poison in the air....well, except for the silent-but-deadly type that all of us can do on occasion.

They ask that? Maybe I'm weird but as a fat person I'm the first one to make sure the armrest is down. I'm so selfconcious about not taking up more than my share of space it's almost pathological. I assumed most large people were the same.

    They are, HC.

Before any of you pounce: The operative word here was "most." I stand by it.

I can't explain it but these two posts made me laugh harder than I've laughed at SJ in a long time.

Regardless of the issue of second-hand smoke, obesity is the larger health problem than smoking right now.
Like smoking, it's a problem that's best handled proactively.
I don't think smoking should be illegal, and I think making trans-fats illegal is ridiculous.
But there's a genuine problem, I think it's effects are further reaching than those of smoking.

As someone of lean build, I'm pretty certain particularly large people have sought me out on my commuter train as the perfect person to sit next to so they can usurp a little additional space. I never voice my annoyance but I still don't like it.

    I said I don't like hippies
    And I don't like cornbread
    And I don't like much
    I said I don't hippies
    And I don't like cornbread
    And I don't like much
    But that's okay
    Fat babies have no pride
    Fat babies have no pride
    Fat babies have no pride
    And that's okay
    Who needs pride
    I like you
    'Cause you like me
    And you don't like much
    I like you
    'Cause you like me
    And you don't like much
    And that's okay
'Cause fat babies have no pride
    Fat babies have no pride
    Fat babies have no pride
    And that's okay
    Who needs pride
    Fat babies make me sick
    Fat babies make me ill
    All that fat baby drooling
    And that fat baby smell
    I said I don't like hippies
    And I don't like cornbread
    And I don't like much
    But I like you
    'Cause you like me
    And you don't like much
    And that's okay
'Cause fat babies have no pride
    Fat babies have no pride
    Fat babies have no pride
    And that's okay
    Who needs pride anyway

Oh, both are genuine problems. But I still think the fact that smoking damanges the health of others while obesity only hurts the fat person makes a difference.

I agree that allowing children to become obese is borderline abuse, as is smoking around the child, because of the health issues those behaviors can cause later in life.

Of course, the people who sell unhealthy foods don't survive by making sure their product is sold to people who legally should not be able to buy it, thus getting them chemically addicted to it before they are old enough to know better.

    :)

And the percentage of obese smokers? Getting smaller every day.

It seems to me that skinny people have more ailments, especially when they get older.
