    In "Veeck as in Wreck," Veeck said that the Cardinals were ready to move to Houston in 1952, but then Gussie Busch bought the team and it was clear to him, the Browns' owner, that they were toast.

    Yeah, about as soon as the ink dried on Busch's purchase papers, Veeck knew he wasn't gonna run the Cards out of town no matter what little micro-aggressive stunts he pulled at Sportsman's Park like covering up Cardinal decorations, screwing around with locker room and press box access, so he said "what the hell" and sold the park to the Carsinals.

    Oh yes Veeck was was also liable for about a million bucks in repairs to bring the park up to fire marshal codes, which he didn't have, so he figured he'd be just as well off letting Busch pay those repair bills.
