What is and is not a sport?

I brought up this idea the "judges' opinions are subjective" with a figure skating woman I know who both teaches and covers the sport. She just about tore my head off.

The points that they use to judge the sport are completely objective---as objective as the home plate umpire who's calling balls and strikes.

I'm not including French judges in this, of course.

I worry that if we don't know what's a real sport, we might not know what a real SportsJournalists.com is!

I'd classify bullfighting and MMA as pre-arranged medical emergencies.

I'm pretty sure this will be met with snark, but I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at here. Where an event happens has nothing to do with whether that event is a sport. My point with the "dance contest" euphemism goes along the lines of what others have mentioned about how it's scored.

I'm guessing Schie got roped into covering a bowling event.

I'd go as far as to suggest Wii bowling is a sport. It has almost all of the physical requirements of real bowling.

And yes, I believe there's no question bowling is a sport.

Wouldn't a "real sport" be classified as anything that Real Sports would do a segment on?

Yeah, you'd bowl with her. Heh.

Especially if she can pat her head and rub her belly at the same time.
