(Realistically, having some presence in Germany makes logistical sense for us. We might not need as many people based there, but we need a base (or bases) there or someplace else in Central/Eastern Europe.

Then, like Dems who like to bash all military spending except what is spent in their own district and who want to close every base, except the ones in their state/district, the Germans all of a sudden realized how much certain cities depend on the economic impact of our bases.)

We defeated Germany 70 years ago, which means staying there to protect France from the Nazis in 2011 makes about as much sense as France invading New York to protect the Confederate States in 1860.

 

We should take a page from history and realize that if the British Empire and later the Soviets couldn't control Afghanistan, odds are we can't either.

 

Maybe we should have thought a little harder about all this in 2002.
