Three sources with knowledge of the incident said Sunday that two officers in one squad car, responding to the 911 call, pulled into the alley. Damond, in her pajamas, went to the driver’s side door and was talking to the driver. The officer in the passenger seat pulled his gun and shot Damond through the driver’s side door, sources said. No weapon was found at the scene.

“Two Minneapolis police officers responded to a 911 call of a possible assault just north of the 5100 block of Washburn Avenue S. just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday,” the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said in a news release. “At one point, an officer fired their weapon, fatally striking a woman.

“The BCA’s investigation is in its early stages. More information will be available once initial interviews with incident participants and any witnesses are complete. … The officers’ body cameras were not turned on at the time and the squad camera did not capture the incident. Investigators are attempting to determine whether any video of the incident exists.”

sounds like a tragic accident. why are bodycams and dashboard cams not on at all times?

There ought to be a rule that if the body camera isn't on when involved in an incident, the burden is on the cop to prove it was malfunctioning, at risk of their job. Turning on the camera needs to become as routine as turning on the patrol car.

Because they might record something that the cops don't want seen. Bodycams and vehicle cams should be on at all times.

The cops must have thought she was black.

Agreed. Although in this case I'd point out there apparently is no claim of any "malfunctioning", instead says the cop simply did not turn it on. And, coincidentally, the car cam also failed to be pointing in the right direction.

In that situation, I'm just presuming any justification excuse put in the police report is pure bullshit, no need to even hear the cop's explanation. Start presuming them guilty and they'll goddamned make sure the cam's on in the future.

The 90-percent of the time they're not doing rational shit like this the cameras would catch them tossing around racial slurs and hitting on women not their wives or girlfriends.

Probably explains why they're not turned on.

Not sure presuming guilt is the road you want to go down in the cops debate.

Makes sense. It also covers their asses when they roll up on someone and step way over the line with them.

Murder-Suicide at home of off-duty police officer in bucolic Seal Beach, CA.

Two bodies found in Seal Beach apartment after SWAT standoff

Either the cop shot and killed the girlfriend, then killed himself; or the girlfriend shot and killed the cop, then offed herself.

Not enough details at his time. It is a developing situation.
