I totally disagree. It is easy to tank on defense. It is easy to slacken effort while chasing another man.

Don't tell me that Colts team was trying, or that it even had the talent level of a 2-14 team.

What was Caldwell's motivation for tanking? Unless Irsay told him he'd be back to begin the Luck era.

Irsay is a drunk and a known liar.

Those Colts won their 14th and 15th games and almost won their 16th, which would have cost them Andrew Luck.

    I don't know how that's tanking.

Right. I remember people saying, "Oh, the Colts not having an experienced backup is proof they're tanking." No, it was proof that they'd had a QB who had never missed a start during his career. I think they also signed Kerry Collins during the season."

That team was not tanking. That team was bad.

How do you get players to tank?

Management and coaches maybe but players are fighting for future employment.

    I explained this.
    Playing defense requires effort.

If a team was tanking, the players would never be in on it. More often than not, the coach wouldn't be either, because if a team "earns" the no. 1 pick in the draft, the HC is usually gone at the end of that season.

Also, even if you sat a player like Ryan or Roethlisberger or Eli Manning, you're handing the ball to a guy who is being given a chance to audition for his next job. You'd better believe he's going to try to make the most of it. You're also making your opponent face a QB who they likely have almost film on, and you had better believe that can throw a defense off...

This was a management team that had knowingly and admittedly checked out of games at the ends of seasons, one instance in which their tanking - and that is exactly what it was - changed the entire complexion of the playoff picture.
    I'm done with this discussion.
